Margie West holds a post graduate degree in anthropology from the Australian National University and has thirty years experience in museum curation and Indigenous cultural issues. She is currently employed as Curator of Aboriginal Art and Material Culture at the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory in Darwin.

Since working for MAGNT she has been involved in a range of programs including heritage maintenance and museum development for Aboriginal communities. She has curated many international as well as national touring Aboriginal art exhibitions, including The Inspired Dream; Rainbow Sugarbag and Moon; Kuruwarri; Hermannsburg Potters; and Hot Wax, an exhibition of Australian, Aboriginal and Indonesian Batik.

Margie West is the founder of the Telstra National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Art Award which has been running since 1984 and has toured nationally since 1995. She has published extensively on Aboriginal art and part of her on-going research includes the increasing involvement of women visual artists in different media - including fibre.
