Peter Hughes has been curator of Decorative Arts at the Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery since 1999.

Previous to this he was engaged in research into the theory of architecture and the decorative arts in the 18th and 19th centuries, with a particular interest in ornament.

He completed a Masters in Art Theory at the Canberra School of Art, Australian National University, on the thought of John Ruskin in relation to design and ecology and has studied furniture making in Hobart and Canberra.
