Since the completion of internationally important projects in 2001 including the National Museum of Australia, Canberra and the Melbourne Museum, Thylacine has continued to evolve and redefine their practice. Their work spans the full spectrum of project type and scale from the design and fabrication of commissioned furniture to the conceptualisation and development of large-scale urban projects. This density of work is achieved through the close collaboration of the Thylacine design teams designers, visual artists, craft practitioners, technical professions and project management. Through a highly productive strategy of avoiding arbitrary distinctions of discipline, Thylacine has contributed significantly to many of Australia's recent museum projects and is developing a significant body of work in the fields of exhibition design, public art and industrial design. Having established their practice in Canberra in 1999 as a place for invention, play and ideation, directors Caolan Mitchell and Michel Starling remain strongly committed to the support of the creative industries and practitioners in the region. Having at one time employed in excess of 53 staff, largely drawn from the Arts/Craft and design professions, Thylacine currently has an active group of 16 fulltime staff located in Queanbeyan and Melbourne. With the relocation to Queanbeyan, NSW as the practice expanded in 2001 and the establishment of a studio situated in Richmond, Melbourne in 2004, Thylacine sees itself continuing to offer creative opportunities to both clients and practitioners alike.
