The recently concluded Sturt Woodfire 2008 conference and its associated exhibitions of Australian and international (selective) wood-fired ceramics provided a wonderful opportunity to gain a fresh insight into what this thing called wood-fired ceramics is, and to replenish our evolving appreciation of the diversity and quality of Australian wood-fired ceramic art.

There is a history to these woodfiring events that has grown over the years. I well remember the 1986 event where I was dressed up in someone's trailing leopard-patterned sleeping bag, had long pink rubber gloves pushed on to my hands, and wearing an alfoil tiara.

Sturt Woodfire 2008

One hundred and seventy-four attended the three day conference, Sturt Wood Fire 2008. Delegates attended forums and individual presentations which explored the full range of issues central to wood fired ceramics.

A day at Sturt Woodfire

Arriving at Sturt there was a gentle haze of rain, falling lightly, a delicate mist suspended, and then settling. The gardens, enchanting and peaceful, transported you to an inner quietness.

The crafted budget

In this issue we focus specifically on the outcome of the federal budget delivered on May 13 this year.

It is the first Labor budget since the government came to office at the end of 2007 and it delivers on many of the election promises made to the arts community.

Budget at a glance

A summary of some of the key areas of support for the arts, most of which are through the Department of Environment, Water, Heritage and the Arts and include,

  1. Resale royalty: $1.5 million over three years to implement a scheme...
  2. Creative Communities Program: $10 million over four years for community participation...
  3. Support for young and emerging artists: $6.6 million over four years for support and projects...
  4. Artist in Residence Education Initiative: $5.2 million over four years to improve access...
  5. Regional Arts Fund: $11.8 million over four years to continue programs...

LONDON CALLING

Launched in June 2008, Fossik is a London-based jewellery agency representing Australia's best contemporary jewellery designers.

Fossik will be approaching a niche range of London stores, galleries and fashion boutiques specialising in contemporary design, with both large and small-scale requirements.

Selected jewellers need to demonstrate an ability to produce distinctive, desirable work and have the capacity and ambition to produce work for this market, whether one-offs or multiples.

Venice Biennale 2009

Private sector support

Throughout April 2008, AbaF surveyed just over 700 not-for-profit arts organisations in Australia to measure the amount of sponsorship and donations they received from the private sector. Survey results

Cultural Award

Lake Macquarie City Art Gallery and its Aboriginal Reference Group (ARG) have won the Aboriginal Cultural Development Award at the prestigious 2008 Local Government Cultural Awards. Practice not Projects

International grants

Victoria’s rich arts culture will go global with grants totalling $200,000 announced through Arts Victoria’s International program. The funding supports 20 export, touring and cultural exchange projects reaching 14 countries across the globe. Media release

New Director

Brian Langer has been appointed the new Director of the Cowra Regional Art Gallery. Brian has over 17 years experience working as an arts and exhibition manager and curator, and 10 years experience as a regional gallery director.
