A new centre hits the Australian glass scene on 25 May, 2007 with the opening of the Canberra Glassworks. Built and funded by the ACT Government, it is the first centre in Australia devoted to contemporary glass practice.
The Canberra Glassworks is the result of over eleven years of work by Canberra based glass artists and others to establish a centre where professional glass artists can practice. The ACT Government came on board early, recognising the opportunity for the ACT to capitalise on the existing strength and international reputation of the Canberra glass community.

Craft Australia Research Centre presents Craft Design and the creative industries: An Australian perspective, delivered by Catrina Vignando as part of the Smart Works symposium held at the Powerhouse Museum in March, 2007. The symposium explored the effects of shifts in the West away from large manufacturing industries and towards 'creative industries', high-cost commodities and tourist economies.

The Annual General Meeting of Craft Australia was held on 13 April, 2007. Robyn Daw was elected to the position of President of Craft Australia. Kay Lawrence continues in an ex officio capacity as the Immediate Past President of the organisation. Appointed to the Board was Chetana Andary and Antonia Syme.
Craft Australia expresses a public thanks to Kay Lawrence as the outgoing President for all her guidance and steerage of the organisation over the past three years.

In this second Living Treasures series, Object and Craft Australia have further enhanced the program by celebrating the short listed finalists in the selection process as Masters of Australian Craft.
This accolade is a new development that acknowledges the wealth and dynamism of the Australian studio craft movement of the past thirty years.
Ten finalists were short listed by the judges. These Masters of Australian Craft are Robert Baines (Vic), Pippin Drysdale (WA), Beth Hatton (NSW), Brian Hirst (NSW), Jeff Mincham (SA), Milton Moon (SA), Kevin Perkins (Tas), Catherine Truman (SA), Margaret West (NSW) and Liz Williamson (NSW).
Of these Masters, three were selected as Living Treasures they are Liz Williamson (2008), Kevin Perkins (2009) and Robert Baines (2010).

The opening of the Smart Works exhibition at the Powerhouse Museum at the end of March marked the beginning of an exciting 3 day symposium that concluded on Sunday 1 April. The exhibition continues till August 2007 and includes the work of 40 Australian and New Zealand makers.
The General Manager of Craft Australia presented a key note paper at the three day symposium. Illustrating current Australian trends of craft and design links with industry, this growing area of activity in Australia gave a dynamic sense of current Australian practice.

A new report examining arts education and its connection to the workplace was released today at the Digital Literacy and Creative Innovation in a Knowledge Economy symposium in Brisbane.
The report is the first output of a three-year partnership between the Australia Council for the Arts and the Queensland University of Technology's ARC Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries and Innovation (CCI). Regional Arts NSW has produced a new compendium of quotes, statistics and facts about the arts for arts advocates and lobbyists in regional New South Wales. Download your copy
The $200,000 Regional Arts Fund for the Australian Capital Territory will be devolved to the Regional Arts Boards for the South East and Southern Tablelands regions of NSW.
Funding will be provided to Southern Tablelands Arts (STARTS) and the South East Arts Region (SEAR) in an arrangement that will see each Regional Arts Board fund joint arts projects that involve communities in both south-eastern NSW and the ACT. Media release
Congratulations to Mel Douglas who was recently awarded the Young Glass 2007 – Lino Tagliapietra Glass Prize at the Ebeltoft Museum in Denmark and to Cobi Cockburn, recent winner of the Talente Prize in Munich, Germany.
Congratulations also go to Elliat Rich, emerging designer from Alice Springs, who will be assisted by Arts NT to travel to Tasmania to join some of Australia’s most talented emerging designers at Design Island.
